It may not have the public relations of its bigger, richer sister La Liga, nor get as much TV exposure. Its teams may play in smaller stadiums and in front of smaller crowd, but boy, do Spain’s Segunda Division, or La Liga 2, have some exciting football matches going on.
Spain’s current league form (including La Liga and La Liga 2) was established in 1929. Quite often, as its history shows, when a team gets relegated from the Primera Division, it sometimes gets into a free fall and drops into La Liga 3 and so on. Of all the clubs that have played in La Liga 2 over the years, only six have never been relegated into lower leagues: Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Sevilla, Espanyol, Sporting Gijon and Real Sociedad.
There is a total of 22 teams playing home and away matches during the season of La Liga 2. Two teams that finish the table 1st and 2nd automatically advance to La Liga, while teams that finished 3-6 in the table advance to a playoff series, from which one team will join the upper league. Meanwhile, four teams that finish last in the table get relegated to la Liga 3.
According to Spanish football association’s regulations, teams are allowed to operate sort of a farm system, in which graduates of their academy play in similar structure to the Premier League’s under 23, and some of Spain’s biggest club “other” teams play in the La Liga 2, like Real Madrid Castilla. If a day would come and Real Madrid will get relegated to la Liga 2, then Real Madrid Castilla will automatically will get itself relegated to the Third Division. On the other hand, farm teams such as Castilla can not get promoted to the upper leagues, where the home club plays. If, for instance, Castilla will finish the season in 1st place, instead of promotion, it will remain in the Segunda Division and will be bypassed by the team that has finished the table beneath it.

During the 2011-12 season Deportivo La Coruna has broken the points marks, when accumulating 91 points on the way back to La Liga.
