Om Leeds United
It's been an extremely happy three season, riding the Premier League train, but its over now. Leeds United was relegated to the Championship following the 2022-23 season. only this time, there is no football pundit in the world who believes it will take another 20 years to go back to the place the all-white belong.
Leeds United was formed in 1919 on the basis of a former local team, Leeds City. The club has rocked between the divisions for most of the century, although it featured one of England's all-time greats John Charles, who played for Leeds between 1949-1957, scoring 157 goals in 297 appearances, before leaving for Juventus.
Fortune has changed with the appointment of Revie in 1961. It took some time, but Leeds has won championship in 1968–69 and 1973–74, as well as the FA cup and an EFL cup. Revie had a marvelous group of players at his disposal, starting with team captain and leader, the uncompromising – well, this term is a gentle way to otherwise say brutal, but that's another story – Billy Bremner, helped by punishing forwards Johnny Giles and Norman Hunter, the brilliance of Allan Clarke and Peter Lorimer, and rock-study defense led by Jack Charleton.
Revie left in 1974 to become England's manager and the team went into a decline, as managers – some of them former players – came and soon gone, until it was relegated to the (then) second division. The climb back started with the appointment of Howard Wilkinson as manager and the signing of Scottish Gordon Strachan. It all clicked during January 1992, when the club signed a much-travelled player by the name of Eric Cantona. The French genius scored only 3 goals the rest of the season, but he helped Leeds with the championship in the First Division's last season before the establishment of the Premier League. Cantona spent another season at Leeds before being sold to Manchester United and almost single-handedly helping to create a dynasty at Old Trafford.
Leeds has reached the new Champions League semi-final but the financial burden and poor management has caused a downward spiral, that resulted in relegation to League One.
And then the club has found a new messiah: On 2018 the club appointed Argentinian Marcelo Bielsa as its new manager. Bielsa has failed to deliver promotion in his first season, but did it in 2020, after 16 long years out of the Premier League, thus becoming a cult hero at Yorkshire.
Bielsa is gone by now and Leeds will have to figure out a way to get back to the Premier League. Fans are calling for owner Andrea Radrizzani, who has just completed a takeover of Italian Sampdoria, to sell the club. Either way, 37,608-seat Elland Road will be rocking next season, because there is still a magic to football in West Yorkshire. And the whites will go marching in.
