Om UC Sampdoria
Relatively speaking, Sampdoria is a new football club. It wasn’t established during the 19th century, it didn’t have to go through two world wars, it’s collective memory doesn’t have an old, golden age. Rather, the club was founded only in 1946. Like many Italian football clubs, Sampdoria is a product of a merger of two clubs operating in the city of Genoa: Ginnastica Comunale Sampierdarenese and Ginnastica Andrea Doria.
As with late comers, Sampdoria - Unione Calcio Sampdoria by its full name - joined the newly formed Serie A. It’s style of play was evident almost from day one: An all-out attack, open and exciting kind of football. The Atomic Attack the team’s offense was named, a policy that will continue to be part of the club in many years to come.
The team won its first Coppa Italia in 1984-85, and later on during the decade, won two more cups. But that was just a hint of what was about to come, as Sampdoria hit its prime toward the end of the 80’s, beginning of the 90’s, as the team featured Gianluca Pagliuca and Attilio Lombardo. In 1988-89, Sampdoria made it to the UEFA Cup Winners Cup Final but lost to Barcelona. A year later, it made it again to the final match, but this time beat Anderlecht 2-0 in overtime. Gianluca Vialli was the scorer of both goals. Up front, Vialli was helped by another briliiant player, Roberto Mancini. And it didn’t end there. In 1990-91, the city of Genoa went mad, ad Sampdoria won its only Scudetto.
A year later, everything went well at the beginning, as Sampdoria beat Roma to win the Italian Super Coppa. The team made it to the final of the European Cup but lost in overtime to Barcelona. And it wasn’t able to repeat as Scudetto winner either.
During the mid-80’s Sampdoria spent big in order to maintain its position. The financial position was very stable and the club just went out and brought in top talents, such as Sinisa Mihajlovic, Ariel Ortega, Enrico Chiesa, Clarence Seedorf, Christian Karembeu, Vincenzo Montella, Juan Sebastián Verón and Alain Boghossian were brought in to strengthen an already very talented team, but it just didn’t work. In 1998-99, it all came trembling down, as Sampdoria was relegated to Serie B.
In later years, Sampdoria bounced back and got promoted to Serie A. It no longer can afford spending large sums of money on top players, but it can, and does, raise young talent and try to hold on to them for as long as it can. As for the football, the priority remains – to play an all-out attack.
