Om SD Éibar
Eibar was first promoted to La Liga before the 2014-15 season. Up to that point, during a history of over 70 years, Eibar never, ever managed to get itself into the 1st division. And why go that far – two seasons prior to that happy moment, in 2012-13, the club was playing in the 3rd tier.
Ever since, Eibar has managed to hang on, to survive, and not to get relegated. Somehow. Just like the Basque country people it is located in, the team is rough, tough, manages to hang in there, somehow.
Eibar sits on the north-east coast of Spain in Basque country. It’s a very small city located somewhere between Bilbao and San Sebastian, home of Athletic and Real Sociedad, respectably, its two closest La Liga and Basque rivals. The city’s entire population is 27,000 people. The club’s home turf, Ipurua Municipal Stadium, hosts 7,083 seats. Both stadium and city fit in, together, in La Liga’s most stadiums. So the story of Eibar is really kind of a miracle, because a club that size, with little or none what so ever financial backing, has absolutely no place playing with the big boys.
SD (Sociedad Deportiva) Eibar was formed in 1940, after a merger of two local football clubs in the city of Eibar. It spent literally all of its history in Spain’s lower leagues, reaching Segunda Division in 2013-14 and surprising everyone, included mostly people of Eibar, in qualifying for La Liga after just one season. While the Basques were celebrating, the Spanish Football Association came calling. No, No, they said, you are on your way to 3rd Division, because the team doesn’t have the necessary capita to compete in La Liga. NO, NO, said the people of Eibar, YOU don’t understand. And the good people of Eibar launched a public fund and were able to raise 1.7 million euros as requested.
Well, by the time the 20181-19 season will open, Eibar will start its 5th season as a proud member of Spain’s football elite.
Some notable players have worn the Barcelona-like claret and blue uniform over the years, among them Ghana’s Derek Boateng, who played for the team in 2014-15 Japan’s Takashi Inui scored 11 goals in 88 matches between 2015-2018 Midfield maestro Xabi Alonso came on a loan from neighboring real Sociedad in 2001-01 And another midfield magician, David Silva, also came on a loan from Valencia for 34 matches in 2004-05.
