The Oakland Athletics (often abbreviated to A′s) are a professional baseball team based in Oakland, California and a member club of the West division of the American League (AL). in Major League Baseball (MLB). The club plays its home games at O.co Coliseum. The club has won nine World Series championships, making them the third most successful of all MLB teams.
One of the American League's eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics. They won three World Series championships from 1910 to 1913 and two in a row in 1929 and 1930. In 1955 they forsook Philadelphia for Kansas City and became the Kansas City Athletics before moving to Oakland in 1968. They won three World Championships in a row from 1972 to 1974 and after a change of ownership, a further three consecutive pennants and the 1989 World Series.
Uniquely a feature film Moneyball, nominated for the Oscars in 2011, has been built around the A’s difficulties in recent years. The plot revolved around Oakland A's GM Billy Beane’s problem with the lowest salary constraint in baseball. If he ever wants to win the World Series, Billy must find a competitive advantage. Billy is about to turn baseball on its ear when he uses statistical data to analyse and place value on the players he picks for the team. This in turn produced conflicts between commercial and playing sectors of the franchise and made for an insightful look into the world of big-time commercial sport.
The film did very largely represent the reality of what was happening in real life and the fact is that the A's have continually succeeded at winning, and defying market economics, keeping their payroll near the bottom of the league.
Here are a few of the talented and interesting players who have represented the Athletics over the years. Rickey Henderson is the greatest leadoff hitter of all-time. His knack for getting on base, stealing bases, and his tremendous passion for the game were what made him great. He's the all-time major league baseball leader in walks, runs, stolen bases, and leadoff home runs.
Starting pitcher Jim "Catfish" Hunter is an eight time all-star, five time world series champion, and Cy Young award winner. He's 5th all-time on the A's list in wins (161), 5th in strikeouts (1,520), 4th in shutouts (31), 8th in complete games (116), and 15th in ERA (3.13).
Right field Reggie Jackson he racked up six all-star selections, an MVP, a world series MVP, and three world series rings in ten seasons for the A's. He ranks 3rd in A's history in home runs (269), 8th in slugging percentage (.496), and 8th in RBI's (776).
