Om Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings, whose home base is Minneapolis, Minnesota play football in the National Football Conference (NFC) North division before that, the Vikings were in the NFC Central, and before that they were in the NFL's Western Conference Central Division. The Vikings were founded as an expansion team in 1960 and commenced their playing activity a year later. At the moment a new stadium is being built for them to be known as the US Bank Stadium on the site of the demolished Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Whilst this construction is taking place, the team play at the TCF Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota.
Several nicknames were suggested for the team, including "Chippewas", "Miners", "Vikings" and "Voyageurs". The team was officially named the Minnesota Vikings on September 27, 1960 the name is partly meant to reflect Minnesota's place as a center of Scandinavian American culture.
The Vikings have historically enjoyed a great deal of success except that they have failed on four occasions to take the ultimate prize of a Super Bowl victory – as they have lost out in Super Bowl IV, VIII, IX and XI. They have also lost in their five most recent NFC Championship Game appearances since 1978. However on a far more positive note, since that first season in 1961 the Vikings have had one of the highest winning percentages in the NFL. Most years find them winning at least three games in every season and are part of an elite group of six NFL teams to win at least 15 games in a regular season. Since the AFL-NHL merger in 1970, they have qualified for the playoffs no fewer than 26 times, the third highest in the league.
Among the greatest players to take the field for the Vikings in the past 55 years quarterback Fran Tarkenton helped the Vikings win their first-ever game, and he changed the league with his scrambling and short-passing game. At one time, he held every major NFL passing mark, and still ranks in the top 10 in most categories.
Perhaps no player in the history of the franchise had such an immediate and dynamic impact as Randy Moss. When he burst onto the scene as a rookie in 1998, Moss set the league on fire, catching 17 touchdown passes and rolling up over 1,300 receiving yards.
A first-round pick in 1988, Randall McDaniel was elected to a record 12 straight Pro Bowl games from 1989-2000. People criticised his stance and his technique, but he kept defenders out of the Minnesota backfield. McDaniel was a gifted athlete, able to dunk a basketball from a flatfooted start.
Running back Adrian Peterson has rushed for over 8,800 yards in his six NFL seasons, already claiming the Vikings' all-time yardage record. His 2,097 yards in 2012 was the second-biggest total in NFL history and came after Peterson underwent reconstructive knee surgery in the offseason. The incredible feat earned him the NFL's MVP award.
