Om KK Partizan
The site is hard to ignore, because it is so unique and exciting. The Stark Arena (Belgrade Arena) is full on match days with thousands of very noisy fans, all wearing black and white, the colors of their favorite home team, weaving huge flags and singing together their chants and songs. If there ever was a sports hall providing the home team with a supporting environment, it is there.
It is enough to look at the long list of former players who were chosen in the NBA draft in order to witness how successful Basketball Club (KK) Partizan is and has been over the years. To name just a few, the list consists of Vlade Divac, Predrag Danilovic, Zarko Paspalj, Zeljko Rebraca, Predrag Drobnjak and Nenad Krstic. There were other names, of course, great players that didn’t make it to the NBA but were part of Partizan teams that won trophies and stared in the former Yugoslavia national teams that dominated European basketball for very long periods of time.
For its first eight years (1945-1953) before sports became independent, Partizan was the team of the Yugoslav army. The club had to wait until 1976 for its first Yugoslav league championship. That team included one of Partizan’s all-time greats, Drazen Dalipagic, who played for the black and white between 1971-1979, 1979-1980 and 1981-1982. That team was so good, that it won two FIBA Korac Cups in a row (1977-78, 1978-79). That team featured an elderly player, a guard named Zeljko Obradovic, who, after retiring from playing, would become Europe’s most decorated coach.
The same Obradovic came back to Partizan as a young coach before the 1991-92 season. That was the season that leading players left Partizan for the NBA and Obradovic had to build a new team. And he did, leading the team to its greatest achievement – winning the EuroLeague, after a 71-70 win over Montigala Joventut. The same year, Partizan also won the Yugoslav league and cup.
In all, Partizan has won 5 Yugoslav league championships, 8 Serbia and Montenegro league championships and 8 Serbia league championships. In addition, the team has won 3 Yugoslav Cup, 5 Serbia and Montenegro Cups and 6 Radivoj Korac Cups, 1 EuroLeague championship, 3 Korac Cups and 7 Adriatic league championships.
In addition to Obradovic, there were few former Partizan players who went on to become leading European head coaches: Dusan Ivkovic won 2 EuroLeague titles with Olympiacos, Aleksandar Nikolic won 3 EuroLeague titles with Ignis Varese, Borislav Stankovic, who, after his coaching career ended, became FIBA and International Olympic Committee Chair, and Dusko Vujosevic, who won a total of 23 titles with Partizan.
There are few basketball games worth attending more than the Belgrade Derby between Partizan and Red Star. Those heated-atmosphere game divided the city and the rival fan-bases. They are much more than a simple 40-minutes games.
