Om Ingolstadt 04
Lovers of football and followers of football clubs are generally used to their clubs having been around for far back into the past – many dating from the end of the 19th and the early years of the 20th century. FC Ingolstadt 04 are one of the exceptions to the rule, because they were founded in 2004 – hence the suffix 04 – from a merger of two other sides, ESV Ingolstadt and MTV Ingolstadt.
Both of these sides were facing bankruptcy and thus unable to continue to participate in professional football in a meaningful way. Many of the players from the two sides were absorbed into the new structure of FC Ingolstadt 04. Naturally the target for the newly launched club was a place in the top echelon of German football the Bundesliga and of course the only place to start was the bottom.
This is the story of their very steady rise upwards. The first season was 2004-5 and the new club started playing in the Oberliga Bayern (IV) making an excellent first impression by finishing second. In the next season (2005-6) they won both the title and promotion to the third division, where they achieved a creditable third place.
Changes in national football structure meant that in order to be promoted again, it would be necessary to finish in the top ten clubs to qualify but that proved no problem and another excellent second place saw them move up to the second division.
All did not go so smoothly in the next few years with some see-sawing between the second and third divisions but the dream that had been hatched in 2004 was finally realised on 17th May 2015 when FC Ingolstadt04 became champions of the 2 Bundesliga and for the first time were promoted to the top tier of German football where in their first season they finished in a satisfactory eleventh slot.
FC Ingolstadt 04’s squad is a mixture of German players and those introduced from elsewhere. The external players include Ørjan Nyland, goalkeeper from Norway who joined in time for the first season in the Bundesliga; Alfredo Morales born in Germany but an American citizen who has played as a defensive midfielder since 2013; Australian Matthew Leckie who has played since 2014 and has made 37 appearances for his own country; midfielder Roger from Brazil who has made over 100 appearances for the club; defender Marcel Tisserand from the Congo ; Austrian Lukas Hinterseer and midfielder Almog Cohen from Israel.
FC Ingolstadt 04 have been fortunate in having considerable sponsorship to support their rise from lowly status to the top rank. Tradition is important in sport and care will have to be taken to ensure that their rise up is not matched by an equal fall from grace.
