Om Huddersfield Town
Is it a Déjà vu story? Can history repeat itself a hundred years later? If Huddersfield Town will somehow, in a miraculous way, win the Premier League title, it will be the sports story of the century, much bigger than Leicester City’s fantasy year. Well, it will most likely won’t happen, but once, as the 20th century rolled on, Huddersfield was one of England’s most decorated teams.
Over one hundred years after establishment, any way one would look at the club, Huddersfield Town remains a cinderella story. The club that was founded in 1908 in the city of Huddersfield, a 160,000 residents market town in West Yorkshire, in the middle of the road between Manchester and Leeds. The club didn’t waste any time, winning the FA Cup in 1921-22 and the English Football League title three times in a row, in 1924, 1925 and 1926, the first English club to achieve that milestone and one of only few to do it over years. From that achievement come the three stars over the club’s shield.
From there, it went downhill for Huddersfield, although it took years. The club was relegated for the first time in 1952. It was the first, but certainly not the last time. Over the next 50 years, the club went back and forth between the two top divisions, sometimes slipping in the 3rd division as well, when it was mismanaged.
It all changed in late 2000, as local businessman Dean Hoyle took over as chairman. True to its Yorkshire heritage, the club signed over 100 partnerships with business and embraced success, known in Huddersfield as the “New Area”. In 2012 the club was promoted to the Championship and five years later it was back to the Premier League. Against all odds, it has managed to survive the first season after taking a point from Chelsea.
Huddedrsfield Town can be proud of the fact that some the biggest names in England have worn the blue and white over the years, such as Manchester City and United great Denis Law, who started his pro career at the club in 1956, playing for Huddersfield for four seasons and scoring 16 goals Bill Shankly, the manager who made Liverpool the biggest club in England managed Huddersfield for three seasons before moving to Merseyside and Northern Ireland player and manager Peter Doherty played for Huddersfield between 1946-1949.
Since 1994, Huddersfield Town play its home matches in Kirklees Stadium, also known as John Smith's Stadium, a 24,121-seat multi-purpose facility.
