Om Feirense
The town of Santa Maria da Feira has a history going back to the times of the Romans and perhaps even further. The football club for which the town is celebrated in more recent times does not have quite such a long pedigree as it only dates back to 1918 but it is a team that has thrived in the second tier of Portuguese football with several brief incursions into the heights of the Primeira Liga. The season of 2016-17 has seen the Club return again to the top and there is belief that this visit will be of far greater duration than previously.
It was to be several decades before Feirense competed in a national league commencing in the mid-1950s – previously they had only been involved in regional competitions – when they entered the Third Division of Portuguese football and by 1960-61 they had gained promotion to the Second Division.
It is not easy for a club to raise its game and its profile with the setup of football in Portugal which is dominated by a few large clubs. Football around the world is geared to finances and marketing and with a stadium at Estádio Marcolino de Castro with a capacity of just 5,500 spectators there is not going to be the kind of income that generates the cash to buy big name players. Feirense has enjoyed some successes in the Second Division where they were champions in 2002-3 and 2010-11 and runners up in 1961–62, 19 76–77, and 1993–94. Third place in 2015-16 brought about the current promotion to the Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football.
There have also been victories in the regional competition where Feriense ran out winners three times: 1959–60, 1965–66, and 1967–68.
Some fine players have turned out for the club over the years and we will pay tribute to just a few. Goalkeeper Rui Correia played 87 games for Feirense between 2002 and 2005, and was able to win two caps for Portugal’s national team at the same time. He was voted Player of the Year in 2002. José Carlos Alves Ferreira Pinto won that plaudit in 2004 in the middle of his playing years for Feriense which lasted from 2003-2007.
Luciano (full name Luciano Alexandre Silva) was a central defender from Brazil who helped the side gain promotion but was unable to halt what seemed to be the inevitable slide back to relegation the very next season.
Looking at the 2016-17 squad, we can see two very remarkable African footballers now plying their trade among Portugal’s elite: Oghenekaro Etebo from Nigeria who combines defensive play with his attacking skills and Cameroon forward William Tchuameni. Much will be expected of this pair if the sad story of immediate relegation is not to be repeated.
