It’s a little hard to believe, but it al started in 1992. Just in 1992 and not a year before. 1992 was that magic year, when Denmark’s national team was a late addition to the Euro instead of the banned Yugoslavia and won it all. 1992 was also the year that Denmark’s national stadium, Parken, was built. And 1992 was the year the F.C. Copenhagen was born.
On second thought, you can trace the team’s history to older times, much older. F.C. Copenhagen is a product of a merger between two local teams based in Copenhagen: Kjobenhavns Boldklub (apparently Europe’s oldest running football club, established in 1876, and Boldklubben 1903. By early 90’s, they simply run out of funds and could not operate any longer. Today, by the way, both clubs still exist as relent feeders for Copenhagen.
Right from the start, the new club had high expectations, among them was to be the best club in Denmark’s Superliga and to appear in European competitions on a regular basis. The beginning was reassuring, as Copenhagen won the 1992 UEFA Intertoto Cup and qualified for next year’s UEFA Cup. In 1997, just five years after getting established, the club bought Parken Stadium from city authorities.
Copenhagen’s biggest rivals in Denmark are city and neighbors Brondby, who share the same stadium. The game between the two teams on April 2006 set Copenhagen’s attendance record with 41,201 spectators. The derby between the city rivals is known in Denmark as the New Firm Battle.
Over the years, some outstanding players played for Copenhagen, among them midfielder Christian Poulsen, who scored 11 goals in 61 matches in two terms – 2000-2002 and 2014-2015. Another was striker Jesper Gronkjær, who scores 16 goals in 114 matches between 2006-2011. And then there was Brian Laudrup. After scoring a goal for Chelsea against Copenhagen during a UEFA Cup Winners Cup second round, he joined the Dane club in January 1999, but only played in 12 matches until the end of the season.
Copenhagen’s all-time appearance leader is William Kvist, who played in 388 matches and counting between 2004-2011, 2015-present. The team’s all-time goal scorer is Brazilian Cesar Santin, who scored 84 goals between 2008-2013.
FC Copenhagen has won 12 Danish Superliga championships, 8 Danish Cups, 3 Danish Super Cups, recorded 8 appearances in the IEFA Champions League, 3 in UEFA Cup Winners Cup and 12 in UEFA Europa League.
