Om Dijon FCO
For many people Dijon is the home of a well-known variety of French mustard but football followers tend to prefer the taste of newly found success at Dijon Football Cote d’Or, usually referred to by the shorter name of Dijon. It was formed by a merger of two local clubs.
However in 1998 co-operation overtook local rivalries and a new club was formed with the purpose of advancing the cause of football in Dijon. As with all such enterprises the ultimate task was getting to the top when starting at the bottom and in fact the rise was quite a fast one.
Within seven years Dijon had reached Ligue 2 which meant a separation of the ways between the amateur and the professional sides of the club. This was of course not an end in itself as the goal remained to play football in the top tier and although Dijon came close on several occasions, the prize eluded them. Success was to come in 2010-11 when Dijon finished third in Ligue 2 and twelve years after the new club’s formation, Ligue 1 football was achieved.
Sadly this was to be strictly transitory. The Club had senior players in conflict and the worst defensive record in the league and the result was relegation after just one season – in fact Dijon failed to win a match for the last two months of the season. Three years elapsed until at the end of the 2015-16 season, Dijon returned to Ligue 1.
Now let’s look at the players who have been successfully associated with Dijon in their recent past. The player who has started most games for Dijon is Stéphane Mangione who played 251 times for the Club for whom he scored 45 goals. Uruguayan forward Sebastian Ribas holds the goal scoring record for the Club, edging ahead of Mangione with 48 goals. He was a very influential player at the Club who were very upset when in 2011 he refused the offer of a new contract.
Baptiste Reynet is the current goalkeeper on the second phase of his time in the Club who he first joined in May 2011 and stayed with for two years making 78 appearances. After a spell with L’Orient he returned to Dijon on loan and has been a Dijon player in his own right since 2015.
A few interesting records about Dijon – their oldest ever player was Stéphane Grégoire who played a match aged 39 years, 3 months and 23 days while their youngest is Patrick M'Pondo who was 17 years, 2 months and 17 days when he played for Dijon away to Brest. The highest total of goals in any one match was 12-1 Cup victory against .US Mahault Baie in 1998-99.
