Historically Burnley is a medium sized market town; in fact its market has a tradition lasting more than seven hundred years. Situated in Lancashire in the North West of England, Burnley is one of many such towns which was transformed by the Industrial Revolution when it became one of the region's most prominent mill towns; at one time it was one of the world's largest producers of cotton cloth, and a major centre of engineering. Such industrial centres were the happy breeding grounds of many great sporting traditions and thus it is no surprise to find that Burnley’s football team were founder members of the English Football League in 1882, six years after their foundation. They came to their famous ground Turf shortly afterwards, at the invitation of the town's cricket club, which is still uniquely situated next to the stadium.
Like many teams Burnley have enjoyed some great successes, mixed with down times. They have been Football League Champions twice, in 1920–21 and 1959–60, have won the FA Cup once, in 1914, and have won the Community Shield twice, in 1960 and 1973. The Clarets (so called because of the predominantly claret colour of their shirts) also reached the 1961 quarter-finals of the European Cup. Among their other distinctions is that they are one of only three teams to have won all top four professional divisions of English football, along with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Preston North End, the latter club being one of Burnley’s local rivals.
The advent of the Premier League has changed English football immeasurably. The big TV money and the world wide interest in every ball that gets kicked makes qualification for the top tier so much more valuable. Burnley made it there for one season in 2009-10, again in 2014-15 but this time their stay in the Championship was just for one year and the Clarets are now back in the Premier League again and this time hoping to make it a long stay.
Jimmy Adamson is reckoned as Burnley’s greatest ever player. Sir Bobby Charlton described Jimmy Adamson as a "tall, slim, elegant player who to my astonishment never played for England." When Burnley under the managership of Harry Potts won the First Division title in 1959-60 captain Adamson played every game. The Turf Moor trio of the cultured Adamson, Irish schemer Jimmy McIlroy and England wing star John Connelly helped the Clarets to lift the title by one point on the last day of the season after a win over Manchester City.
Striker Ray Pointer is another Turf Moor favourite. He made over 400 appearances for Burnley between 1957 and 1964 scoring 164 goals. Welsh international winger Leighton James played two stints for the club, with his League debut in 1970 starting his career. In his first period he made 180 appearances and scored 45 goals.
