The Buffalo Bills are a professional American football team based in the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area that competes in the National Football League (NFL). They are members of the league's East division of the American Football Conference (AFC). The team plays their home games at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. As it happens, the Bills are the only NFL team that plays its home games in New York State as the two teams with a New York designation play in a stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The franchise name is a hangover from a previous football team from the Buffalo area named after the Buffalo Bills a popular barbershop quartet, whose name was a play on the name of the famed Wild West showman Buffalo Bill Cody.
The Bills commenced as an original franchise of the American Football League (AFL) in 1960. The club joined the NFL as a result of the AFL–NFL merger for the 1970 season. The 1964 and 1965 Bills were the only teams representing Buffalo that won major league professional sports championships ("back-to-back" American Football League Championships). The Bills are the only team to win four consecutive conference championships and are the only NFL team to play in four consecutive Super Bowl games.
The downside of all this that along with the record of playing those four Super Bowl games in a row, the Bills also managed to lose all of them, a less desirable record to hold. In the same way the Bills have the longest active playoff drought in any major professional sport: they have not made the playoffs since 1999 and are the only team that has not appeared in the NFL playoffs so far in the 21st century.
Some well-known names have appeared for the Bills over the years. Bruce Smith is one of the best defensive players not only for the Buffalo Bills franchise, but in the history of the National Football League. Drafted with the first pick of the 1985 NFL draft, Smith went on to record more sacks than any player in the history of the league.
Jim Kelly was the third quarterback taken in the 1983 NFL draft. Kelly led the Bills to a 101-59 regular season record, taking the team to the Super Bowl four years in a row.
O.J.Simpson may be better known nowadays for his exploits off rather than on the field but there is no questioning his talent and achievement as one of the best running backs in NFL history.
Andre Reed was Jim Kelly's favorite receiving target for his 15 years with the Buffalo Bills. He was the starting wide receiver for the Bills during the Super Bowl years, catching 941 passes for 13,095 yards and 86 scores in his 217 starts with the team.
