Om Argentina
Wish they were here. Ever since the Rugby Union of Argentina adapted an approach that decline to invite players that are based out of the country for the national team, the team has been in total decline in its world standings and results. And voices are mounting and keeping the pressure on the union to change or at least modify the policy.
Argentina is not the first and not alone setting the same policy. World power New Zealand has a similar rule, but also a much deeper pole of players than Argentina to choose from, a luxury that Argentina simply can’t afford. And so, in only a matter of a year, Argentina has dropped in the international pools from fifth to 10th, a drop that has led even national coach Daniel Hourcade to admit that he would have liked to invite at least three out of the country players for the national squad. Pundits have also called for a change, claiming Argentina simply can’t play with the big boys of Europe and the Pacific, because the situation in South American rugby is different, and thus the future will not look brighter until a necessary change is made.
The national team of Argentina made great strides in trying to close the gap with the world’s elite. Los Pumas, as they are called, started playing rugby only after the turn of the millennium, in 1910, and got their nickname from a journalist who covered an international tour. The national team gets plenty of fans’ support from all over Latin America and Spain, as it is the only Spanish speaking country in rugby’s top 20, and the game is the fastest growing team sports in Argentina.
It wasn’t until mid-1960’s, that Argentina started challenging the world’s elite, Troubles started with the turn of the new millennium, when home-grown players were offered the chance to play overseas, mainly in Europe. In spite of that, team’s success grew, and in the 2007 World Cup it went all the way to the semi-finals – the first ever team outside the Six Nations to reach that stage - where it has lost to eventual winner South Africa. Due to the fact that club rugby in Argentina is mainly amateur, most of the top players leave at some stage to Europe. And this is where the national team has started feeling the effects.
Argentina has participated in the World Cup since it’s inception in 1987 and the highest it has reached was a 3rd place in 2007. The team’s most capped player is center Felipe Contepomi, who has registered 87 matches between 1998-2013. He is also the national team’s top scorer, with 651 points.  The player with most tries for the national team is wing José María Núñez Piossek, who, between 2001-2008 registered 29 tries.
