Om Anadolu Efes
There is nothing new to the fact that Turkish basketball is among the top of European basketball, as Turkish teams have appeared in the Euroleage's Final Four constantly since 2015. At first, Fenerbahce was the dominant force, to be replaced in recent years by Anadolu Efes.
Not only has Anadolu Efes won the Euroleage in 2020-21 and 2021-22, but the team from the Turkish capital of Istanbul appeared in the tournament's final in 2019-20, were it lost to eventual champion CSKA Moscow.
The feat is quite amazing, considering Anadolu Efes Spor Kulübü (sports club) was established only in 1976 as Efes Pilsen. Since then, the club holds the record for Turkish first division championships with 14. Just two years after first starts playing, the club has advanced to the first division and won its first championship (1978).
Anadolu first won a major European trophy in 1995-96, when it won the (than) FIBA Korac Cup, after defeating Stefanel Milano in the final.
Over the years, some notable players have played for Anadolu, most notably its current point guard, Shane Larkin, who plays for the team since 2018. Larkin, an American. Also plays for the Turkish national team after becoming Turkish citizen.
Other notable players include: Anthony Mason, who went out to have a distinguished NBA career of 13 season, including playing in the finals with the New York Knicks Macedonia great Petar Naumoski, who played for Anadolu for two different terms, 1992-1994 and 1995-1999 Chris Corchiani, who came to Istanbul after playing for the Boston Celtics Conrad McRae, who, together with Naumoski help Anadolu to the 1995-96 Korac Cup, Turkish league championship and Turkish cup Brigham Young University head coach Mark Pope, who won a championship in his first season in Istanbul, before going on to play in the NBA and tow-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers Sasha Vujacic, who came to Istanbul from the New Jersey Nets and won two championships with Anadolu.
Anadolu Efes play its home games in 16,000-seat Sinan Erdem Dome.
