It’s second only to the mighty Premier League, yet the English Football League Championship is one of the most exciting leagues in the world, where level of play is at least as good as some of the leading countries in the world of football. Well, now, the picture is bright and clear. And so is the level of play and the competition.
The Championship (AKA English Football League Championship, or EFL Championship) was born in 2004, a matter of commercial need. The establishment of the Premier League in 1992 has excluded it from the Football Association system and placed it on a plateau by its own. Suddenly, there was the Premier League, which has established itself as the most exciting league in the world – professionally and economically – and all the rest. The old Second Division turned into just another division among the rest. Prior to the 2004-05 season, out of a commercial need, the First Division of old was re-named the Championship, a move which has set it aside from the new League One and League Two. And the Championship has never looked back.
During the course of a season, 24 teams battle each other in order to get promoted to the Premier League on one hand, and to avoid relegation to League One on the other. The clubs that finish the regular season first and second get promoted automatically, while the clubs which finished the season 3-6 battle it out in an exciting playoff and the winner – the final is being played in Wembley Stadium in front of 90,000 spectators – also join the Premier League. The bottom three clubs get relegated to League One.
