Football has its own claim of the rich and famous by the form of the Champions League. Basketball has created its own version by the name of the EuroLeague. Track and field is played out in major stadiums all over the continent under the Grand Prix title and tennis is sticking to old tradition with Wimbledon, Roland Garos and so on. As for handball, it is a fairly new league, but non the less an extremely exciting one, under the name of EHF Champions League.
EHF stands for European Handball Federation, the governing body of handball clubs and federations in Europe. It was founded only in 1991 in Berlin, Germany, two years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and consists today of 50 member federations. The EHF Champions League was originally founded in 1956, during the days of the Cold War, but its newest and current format came into existence in 1993.
An acceptance to the EHF Champions League is a selection process by the EHF, which chooses nine clubs – federations’ national champions - to automatically participate in the Champions League on a yearly basis, based on the ranking of member federations. The other seven clubs are chosen for participation based on certain criteria. The clubs are then being divided into two groups with eight teams each. After group stage games are over, the first two seeded teams advance automatically, while teams seeded three to six play a playoff series.
Spain’s Barcelona holds the record with 10 EHF Champions League championships and it is the current champion. The club is followed by Germany’s VfL Gummersbach with five titles and THW Kiel with four, Czech Republic’s Dukla Prague has won the tournament three times, as well as Spain’s Ciudad Real, Germany’s Magdeburg and former Soviet Union’s and SKA Minsk of today’s Belarus.
Standing atop the all-time goal-scorers (and counting) is Kiril Lazarov from North Macedonia, who has scored 1363 goals starting in 1991.
