The Copa Libertadores is South America's version of the Champions League, the continent's elite club competition and one of the most exciting football tournaments playing around the globe. The cup – full name Copa Libertadores de America – is organized by CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation).
A as a total of 47 clubs from 13 federations participate in cup matches, which was established in 1960. starting in January all the way to November. The countries that send clubs to the Copa Libertadores are Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico. In order to qualify, a club has to win its country's championship, or to finish at the upper part of league table.
For clubs participating, there are three knockout stages leading to a group stage, that consists of eight groups, each contain four clubs. Eight group winners and eight runners-up advance to the final knockout stage.
Argentina's Independiente is the record holder, with 7 Copa Libertadores wins. The club is followed by Boca Juniors (6), Uruguay's Penarol (5), River Plate and Estudiantes (4 titles each). Brazil's Palmeiras, Santos, Sao Paulo, Gremio and Flamengo has won 3 Copas each.
Alberto Spencer of Ecuador is top goal score of the tournament with 54 goals in 87 appearances. He is followed by Fernando Morena of Uruguay, with 37 goals in 77 appearances and his countryman Pedro Rocha, who scored 36 goals in 88 appearances.
Winner of the Copa Libertadores play in the FIFA Club World Cup, which plays in December, alongside winners of UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup (Asia), CAF Champions League (Africa), CONCACAF Champions League (North, Central America and Caribbean) and OFC Champions League (Oceania).
The 2022 Copa Libertadores winner in Flamengo. The club has also won the competition in 2019.
The 2023 final of the Copa Libertadores will be played in the Maracana in Rio De Janeiro.
