The governing body for athletics was founded in 1912—just after the Stockholm Olympics—as the International Amateur Athletic Federation. It evolved in name and structure to become World Athletics, now overseeing track and field globally.

Legendary competitors include Jesús Ángel García from Spain, who competed in over ten World Championships in the 50 km walk, and Portugal’s Susana Feitor, known for her record number of appearances in the walking events.
